It is considered by many to be Coltrane's first "true" solo album, as it is the first he recorded featuring musicians and songs entirely of his choosing. All of the compositions were written by Coltrane, save one ("I'm Old Fashioned", a Jerome Kern/Johnny Mercer standard). The title track is a long, rhythmically variegated blues with a brooding minor theme that gradually shifts to major during Coltrane's first chorus. "Locomotion" is also a blues riff tune. Elsewhere, whereas Coltrane's next major LP, Giant Steps, would break new melodic and harmonic ground in jazz, Blue Train adheres to the hard bop style of the era. That being said, two of its tunes, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird" do anticipate the "Coltrane changes" he would later develop. (Musicologist Lewis Porter has also demonstrated a harmonic relationship between Coltrane's "Lazy Bird" and Tadd Dameron's "Lady Bird".

Nicole Henry gained attention in 2005 when she released her debut CD, The Nearness Of You.

She started off singing in church and school choirs, and she studied cello for six years. Henry received a scholarship to study architecture in college but instead graduated with a degree in advertising and theater. In 2000 she toured as a background singer for Robet Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, performing dance music. She has since worked as an actress, a spokesperson, an r&b singer and more recently in jazz. She discovered jazz when she was singing in Miami Beach. Bassist Paul Shewchuk invited her to learn some jazz standards and gig with his trio. She found that she enjoyed the freedom of the music and that has been her main direction ever since.

Based in Florida, Nicole Henry has performed in Korea, Japan, Mexico, London and throughout the U.S. She has thus far recorded The Nearness Of You and the Japanese-only release Teach Me Tonight.

For all who want to discover the Emperor of the Blues or to have a mantra if they’re already stung worshippers like me. All classic tracks recorded by John Lee Hooker… and friends. Charles Brown, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, and Bonnie Raitt are only some of the performers who appear here, and the tracks, selected from recordings made by the prolific guitarist since 1988, show that Hooker hasn’t lost his touch. Among the highlights, there’s a smokin’ duet with Raitt on “I’m in the Mood,” a rendition of “Boom Boom” with a guest appearance from Jimmie Vaughan, and a reprise of Hooker’s 1956 hit “Dimples” with Los Lobos backing up. Mention must also be made of the lone solo track on this CD, the acoustic “Tupelo,” which hearkens to Hooker’s Delta blues roots. There are also three previously unreleased tracks, which are three more reasons to get this compilation
